In Run from the Dark, the Dark or Darkness is an entity that whispers through its sirens to the people of the world. It is not an absence of light but a diseased and evil thing, it spreads forth from the bowels of the earth and darkest forest every winter to extinguish the light of the world.

Each character must carry a light or be taken by the Darkness, their light is a unique part of character creation where this central piece of equipment forms where you come from. It is not just a choice of another item you carry but fundamental to how you hold back the Dark. It is unique and should be embraced as part of defining who you are in this bleak world.
